Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) focuses on your interactions and relationships with other people.

How it works

The aim of IPT is to help you communicate better with others and address problems that contribute to your depression.

We typically focus on the following relationship difficulties that may have led to your depression:

  • Conflict with another person

  • Life changes that affect how you feel about yourself and others

  • Grief and loss

  • Difficulty in starting or keeping relationships going

We also take stock of the relationships that are important to you, looking at their strengths.

We equip you with the skills you need to direct difficult emotions in positive ways. We’ll encourage you to practice these new coping techniques interacting with others and in social settings.

What it’s like

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) and have several common features but they are not the same therapy.

In essence, IPT is a here-and-now, structured, goal-focused therapy whereas in DIT, more time is spent reflecting on difficult past experiences and the therapy is less directive.

Compared to some other therapies we offer, the emphasis of IPT is the interpersonal difficulties that contribute to your depression. The therapy focuses on changing your thinking and behavioural patterns in relationships.
